The only option for the box will to be have it rebuilt, to have it unwound shouldn’t be a big job though.
Ha ahh, try Jon on here for bits, get lucky on ebay or join the club and ask Graham Potter (club boss) if he has anything or can point you in the right direction. The club is £8 a year I think..

fritzMemberHi Royston,
Excellent choice of project. Have you joined the club and downloaded all the manuals? There is pretty much everything you could need and in the old selection of newsletters some good guides about maintainance and problems other people have worked through. There is also an alternative parts guide for bits and pieces.
1. Has yours got the transfer box? If so what is wrong with it? This is one of the only bits of the UMM (apart from the body panels) that you can’t get from anywhere else. I believe the chain inside it is made just for this application too and some strange dimensions that you won’t find elsewhere.
2. Which bit of the heater? The hot/cold lever switch is from a renault 4 or 5 I believe – again information gleaned from the pdfs of old club mags/parts guide.
3. Dashboard bits all Peugeot 505 I believe.
regards,
fritz
ps. drop me a pm with your email, I have some stuff to send
fritzMemberand a couple more shots
fritzMemberDamo, any extra info on this and how you got it to this stage? Particularly interested in your suspension setup – are you using stock prop shafts there? Standard springs? Looking at raising mine a couple of inches but had only considered getting some new springs manufactured by some company in London.
regards,
fritz
fritzMemberif you have one going then I may be keen… let me know where abouts you are based?
fritzMemberare the cab tops on Transcats and Alters interchangeable? Almost thinking of turning mine from a station wagon into a cab with a soft top rear… I’m only over the border in devon..
fritzMemberawesome!
fritzMemberAhh nice one, you can put more pictures on a post if you hit the reply button in the bottom right of the forum rather than the submit quick reply thats on the left.
Looking forward to more pictures!
fritzMemberDamo,
That’s awesome! Would love an Alter like that, excellent!
Very interested in pictures of the suspension setup and props.
Do you notice a difference with the bigger intercooler? That is something I have been considering – I think Allisport who make stuff for LRs would make a bigger one to suit.
hope the arm heals soon,
fritz
fritzMemberLast year it had
– some much needed soundproofing in the rear tub, transmission cover, front floors, this is made by Dynamat/Dynaliner and is pricey but has made a noticeable difference – especially on the motorway.
– stainless short side exit exhaust made by the original stainless supplier to UMM uk, Double S, just up the road in Cullumpton!
– Warn 9.5XP Winch in a custom made tray that sits in-between the two front chassis rails which is more than capable of hauling it out of any sticky situation. The switch units are made by Carling and I got them from Devon 4×4.
– steering box rebuilt with new seals – done by a company in callington, cornwall, very good!
fritzMemberIn the first year it had a
– new set of tyres, some chunky mud terrains instead of the ancient and small flexing set of all terrains that it came with
– a new radiator after the old one was found to have a tiny split that was leaking almost imperceptibly into the fan case
– an oil change and all the fluids changed, brake, power steering, oils in axles & gearbox.
– some copper seal to stop a slightly leaky core plug
– a new diesel filter and primer unit as it was hard to start and turned out to be sucking air in through one of the unions on the primer unit.here’s a couple of pictures of the tyres, in the front on view the old tyre is on the left, the new mud terrain on the right.. the dog is charlie.
fritzMemberPeugeot (XD3TE) 2.5 Turbo Intercooled Diesel, as fitted to the 504 GTD Saloon – although I believe there are quite a few differences, sump etc between the two so probably best to rebuild yours?
If stuck I think Tom Ashworth still has an engine for sale and a rebuilt head – his contact details are on the front page of the website in the treasure trove bit…
Have you joined the club? Graham is a wealth of knowledge.
Good luck, it’ll be worth it!
fritzMemberAlmost didn’t see this in the transcat section…. Damo, that is awesome!
Looks a bit of a winch challenge beast, good work! Still running the original motor? Couldn’t tell whether you had a bigger intercooler or whether that was stock.
What is the suspension work, looks a bit raised? The winch a Warn 9.5XP? I have the same and works a treat.
Looking forward to more pictures! Where are you based?
fritzMemberyep sounds a good bet! That and check the lines aren’t perished?
fritzMemberps. it’ll be well worth your while joining the club. You get a quarterly magazine, entry via this site to all the factory manuals and parts lists/diagrams, lists of alternative parts/sources and alot of scans of the old club magazines which are full of useful technical articles – someone has always modified or fixed the bit you are thinking about.. very helpful!!
fritzMemberHi Dan,
I have my Alter II (a swb station wagon) insured with Adrian Flux on a 5000 mile a year policy, parked on the driveway for a few hundred notes I seem to remember.. I also tried NFU and one other that knew what the vehicle was but wanted almost a grand.
I have another two specialist cars insured with Adrian Flux and would recommend them, always found a good service and quick at responding to questions.
Where abouts are you based? There is another UMMbulance in devon that is converted to a rather smart camper.
