Painted the front wing on the driver’s side. Two coats of undercoat and two topcoats. I can start to see what it will look like when it is all painted.
mrmoskyParticipantHere is the panel painted up and ready to go into the car. Then I can fit the dashboard and start to tidy up the electrical wiring.
mrmoskyParticipantAlso, the same owner had cut an access panel in the heater bulkhead / engine cover, to allow access to the clutch slave cylinder. I have now cut a panel in the opposite side to allow access to the starter motor. Without these access panels it is practically impossible to get at the starter or clutch cylinder without major work in removing the engine bulkead. This will all be finished properly and painted.
mrmoskyParticipantOne of the previous owners had cut the centre cover in half across the car. This is not a bad idea, because it means that this part of the panel can be removed without disconnecting the handbrake. That means it is possible to get to the top of the gearbox if required.
The panel had not been finished properly though, so I have made a flange up for the join and welded it on. This is a trial fit, and some fixing holes will be drilled later on.mrmoskyParticipantBrake master cylinder and servo fitted. Coolant added and ready for a test drive!
mrmoskyParticipantAnother picture of progress, the front end is coming along nicely now.
mrmoskyParticipantHi ookmooi,
I hope all is well with you.
I noticed that the front index page is not updating with the date of the last post.
Cheers,
Geoff
mrmoskyParticipantA nice sunny day, so good for painting.
I also took the water pump off the engine in order to check it’s condition. It is easy to get at right now, so I took the opportunity. The pump is fine, and so it went back on again, together with the new thermostat cover I bought.
mrmoskyParticipantFinally able to make some real progress. The front end needs to be cleaned up for painting, and so all the structures and parts in the way were removed. It is not in too bad condition, so with a wire brushing, it should be ready for a few coats of thick paint.
mrmoskyParticipantAnd here we are. City Radiators in Bilston have done a great job. Apparently there were leaks everywhere. From the top tank edges, under the metal plates at the top, and multiple places in the core.
They replaced the core and repaired all of the other leaks. It’s been pressure tested to 30 psi.
mrmoskyParticipantAnother possibility would be to get the drum skimmed. There is usually enough metal thickness to allow for a high spot to be turned off.
mrmoskyParticipantHi mate,
I doubt the drum is bent. But you never know.
It’s worth trying to adjust the rear again. Adjust the handbrake cables first. That sometimes helps.
GeoffmrmoskyParticipantAs the weather looked OK today, I felt it was time to do something on the UMM.
The radiator had been leaking and so I decided to get it off and take it for repair. There is a firm nearby in Bilston who are able to do this sort of repair. I will take it along in the next couple of days.
mrmoskyParticipantHi,
The transfer case is unique to UMM. If the case is not repairable, you will need to ask around in the UMM forums for anyone who has a spare. I bought one last year to replace my broken one. They are hard to find. Alternatively, you can get one from Portugal, from UMMonline4x4 or Pecas Umm. They both are happy to ship. Price may be high though.
Geoff
mrmoskyParticipantNot much progress to report in the last couple of weeks. The weather has been poor – cold and rainy. I did manage to get the Umm started this week. The relay for the cylinder heaters was not working. This turned out to be a disconnected ground connection. So that is another job ticked off.
mrmoskyParticipantAh, the joy of discovering all the quirks of a new vehicle!
Well done, and why not post a picture of your Umm?
All the best,
GeoffmrmoskyParticipantThe wheels I had from Alan needed a bit of cleaning and repainting, so I have been doing that. Here are four of the wheels after cleaning and with a coat of primer on the front faces. I am thinking that red might look good against the grey paint on the body, so I may paint them with a red finishing coat too.
The other work recently has been more welding on the rear of the body. Not too much more of this to do I hope.
mrmoskyParticipantI had an interesting trip this week to Motherwell to meet up with Alan, a previous owner of this UMM. He acquired it from Tilcon, (a quarry company), and he repaired and painted it green before selling it on. He also gave me some useful UMM spares to help with my restoration, so thanks Alan!
Here is a photo that Alan gave me of the UMM in it’s original colour scheme, as he took ownership. This would have been before 2005. It is already showing signs of hard work!
mrmoskyParticipantHi John,
Thanks for putting Alan in touch with me. I had an interesting chat with him. He was able to give me details of his ownership, and where it came from.
Geoff
mrmoskyParticipantThe roof is almost finished on the UMM-Shelter. I have fitted the repainted driver’s door this week. It works well, but I may need to just apply a further top coat if the weather is warm enough.
